Case: 9" x 4" x 6" brass miniature skeleton clock (miniature=movement does not exceed 6.5" in height) with the front and rear plates made in the shape of scissors and the plates secured with five tubular brass pillars screwed at the front plate and pinned at the back. These frames are not filled with ornamental engravings as some are. The plates carry the serial number of this clock, #4039. The brass movement sits upon a brass base which carries the mark of winning, "Honorable Mention" at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London. The ovoid base plate is screwed down to an ebonized wooden oval base which rests on interesting ebonized French convex bracket feet with concave heels and a padded foot at the bottom. The clock is covered with a fitted glazed dome.

Dial: White porcelain dial with black enameled Roman hours, closed minute ring, central aperture with the geared brass alarm wheel at the center with Arabic hours 1−12. There are steel Breguet hands and a steel spear shaped alarm hand.

Movement: A single going barrel for the eight day timepiece. There is an anchor escapement with silk thread pendulum suspension, a ratchet wheel sits at the top of the framework above the dial and its function is to adjust the height of the silk thread pendulum in order to make the clock faster and slower. Usually the bob would have ornamental decoration. However, like the frames, the bob is solid brass with no decoration. The alarm spring is found inside the base and is wound by a pull− cord exiting the base from the right side (the viewer's right). A second pull cord descends from the left side of the dial, into the base and exits the base from the left side. This cord allows the alarm to be set without removing the glass dome. Each time this cord is pulled a small steel pawl engages a ratchet tooth in the alarm disc, and one proceeds to pull the cord, tooth by tooth until the desired time of awakening is reached. (The alarm can easily be set manually by removing the glass dome).

Condition: Case − Original, genuine and intact. The brass has no decoration, nor the pendulum bob, but that is true of many of these French miniatures. Dial − Two hairlines at the 38−40 minute marker. Movement − original, genuine and functional.
